K2/evening Seminar students, blog assignment #2 (due March 24th)

K2/evening Senior Seminar students - it's that time again. Time to post your second blog-comment status update about the progress of your research. (Try to contain your excitement.)

You've all been working very hard, and the end is in sight (April 7th). Hurrah! You should be done, or close to done, with your data collection and have begun to enter and/or analyze your data. Then comes the fun part! (Seriously.) Finding out whether or not your hypothesis is true, finding out the answer to your research question.

I look forward to reading your comments. As you did before, post them in the "comments" section of the blog.

  1. This is Jason Selander posting to let you know I am alive and well. Would like to know what the plan is since class today was cancelled and there are people who had the homework assignment that you extended due today.

  2. I have gathered 125 articles, 100 of which I will use for my research. I have everything coded and all my information is ready to be put into SPSS. Thankfully, I am almost finished. All I have to do is input the information into SPSS and then finish up with my final research paper. The end is in sight for me.

  3. I was actually looking forward to working with the study that I have found for my research, because it was relevant for my topic. Unfortunately, when I went to put in the datasets through the SPSS Software, I found out that my study was actually restricted and I couldn’t use the information I needed, because of so much personal data in the study. I would have to request permission from the actual website (NACJD). Because we are on a time limit, I do not have a choice but to find another data. I have been searching for the perfect study that would be close to my research topic. I may have found one, however when I went to the computer lab today, once again something was not working right. This has been very frustrating for me, because I would like to get it done and I actually enjoy doing the research and working with SPSS, but I can’t do it just yet because I haven’t come across the right study. I am hoping that I can figure it out on Wednesday and finish up my research.

  4. I would like to second Olga B's opinion on this SPSS ordeal; this assignment has been far from simple. Luckily we class tomorrow which should prove to be very helpful, at least for myself. I thought working with an existing database was going to be easier than what this has become, but at the same time it feels like it is task that can be accomplished. Wednesday can't come any sooner!

  5. Okay, i am still here kicking and screaming. I have held several focus groups and need only a few more students. I have coded my transcript and look forward to class tomorrow to enter the information into the spss database. Are you ready to hold all our hands?????? The end is almost in sight....almost.

  6. This is Gregory here and I am also doing well. I got all my focus groups don't and all my surveys are finished. I am looking forward to class tomorrow so we can discuss how to code this data and for some reason i didn't come up with 50 pages but like 14 on my transcript. People in Kean aren't very talkative that's for sure. Once I am coded and entered into the computer I can finish this up and hopefully graduate.

  7. Alright so i decided on content analysis......lets just say it was a lot more involved then I thought. I finally have all 100 articles coded and now the fun part is building an spss database and hopefully everything runs a lot smoother from there. I will admit i did have a few breakdowns but I think my final outcome will be worth it......I hope

  8. I am doing my project using existing data. I feel that this was more difficult than originally anticipated. I have the data downloaded and have narrowed it down to the variables that I am going to use to test my research question. I am kind of stuck now because I really do not know what I am doing with SPSS. Hopefully tomorrows class will shed some light on this prediciment so I can move forward and get this thing done.

  9. I am still continuing on with my survey and focus groups. It has been alot of effort and hard work so far no joke. I have just about all my people for focus groups and a fair share of info for my database. Im looking forward to tomorrows class so I can feel more completed.

  10. Hi I have downloaded the dataset I needed, renamed the variables, and deleted the ones I did not need. It was difficult narrowing down variables because I wanted to use all of them. Hopefully, all the work will be worth it once I learn how to analyze it.

  11. I started out doing the survey and focus group but, changed my mind and went with exiting data. There is a lot of information that I gathered. Yes, it was very interesting. Looking forward to finding out the answers to the question that I always wanted to know. How could I keep ex-offenders from re-offending? I will be creating a database in SPSS next and this will give me the answer to my question. Thank you professor for steering me in the right direction.

  12. I have typed up all of my recorded information from my focus group portion of my project. All my data collection is finished the only thing I am having trouble understanding is the coding part. I'm sure after tommorow evenings class I will have a better idea on what I should be doing.

  14. I'm using existing data for my project. It has definitely been more difficult then I thought it would be. I have downloaded my data set and chosen the variables that I am going to use. I'm hoping tomorrows class will help me finish this project.

  15. I am doing my project using existing data and have been going over the data sets. Picking the best variables have been difficult in narrowing them down. I am hoping tomorrows class will help me with spss as I had trouble with the previous spss homework. I have my data ready for the most part and putting it into spss will be the final part but believe it is going to be very time consuming. I just hope i chose a good enough data set and learn a lot from tomorrows spss practice.

  16. This is Clint Linfante. i am using an existing data set in spss. I have downloaded my data set and i am currently trying to pick the best variables in relation to my topic. i am having some trouble using spss.

  17. Hey its jeremy i am using survey and focus group for my research project,I have yet to complete the number of people needed and still have alot of work to do. Hoping this week will be all finished up and completed.

  18. I've downloaded my data set and I think I've picked the best variables; however, I haven't entered my data yet. I am hoping I can get a more clear idea tonight in class on how to do it.

  20. Its Alicia and im using an existing dataset. I have chosen my variables but have not downloaded it into SPSS yet. I plan to take full advantage of todays class time to get most of this done. btw where is the computer lab??

  21. This is Jason Selander reporting again. I have done so far one focus group and plan on asking the class tonight to see if I am able to get more participants to help me out.

  22. I'm still gathering articles that are related to my topic. Once I meet my goal of a 150 articles I will begin to move on to the next step in the content analysis.

  23. This has been a challenge for me from the start. I have redone my proposal five times to finally get it right. I am finally ready to download my data but I now have to narrow it down by both state and two different databases. I am looking forward to getting some questions answered on Wednesday so I can continue with my work.

  24. Hello, sorry for the delay. Collecting and anaylzing the data need for class has been challenging as well as very educational. I've been learning alot about my ethnicity as well as getting constructive feedback on others. It is intresting to see what other people think on such controversal topics such as mine on immigration and if it increases crime within the united states.
