K2/Evening Senior Seminar Students, blog assignment #1 (due Feb 10th)

Students enrolled in my K2/evening section of Senior Seminar (which meets Wednesdays at 4:30pm) should post here a status update re: where they're at with their proposal. Proposals are due next week, so at this point you (the student) should have a solid idea of what-all your study will entail.

Post an update - correct spelling and grammar, please - in the "comments" section. I look forward to reading your updates.

If someone raises an issue that I think is applicable to everyone, I'll post a reply for all to read.

Good luck!

My topic is the relationship between drugs and crime. I was originally going to use the survey question and focus group as my Research Design. I now beleive it would be more effective for me to build a database in SPSS using an existing data source as my Research Design.

Through my research I am interested to find out the correlation between drug use and criminal activity? And if there is one, which causes which and what are some explanations for the relationship of drug use and crime? For my research proposal my research design was option (d), under the ‘Research Design’ of the course syllabus. For the purpose of my research I am going to download existing data from ICPSR.org relating to my topic. We may have went over this in class, but as far as handing in the research proposals on February 17th, how different should it be other than the revisions we have to make from the proposal we got back from last semester?

  3. My research design will either be working with exsisting data or download an exsisitng dataset from ICPSR.This is becoming a difficult task.

My research proposal is trying to explain the causal factor, if any, between famiy structures and juvenile delinquency. I am using the survey and focus group methods, withe the hope my fellow students will aid me in this aspect, but i am also viewing the records of existing data in the ICPSR files to see which method would give me more information. I have found my remaining three articles and am moving forward smoothly with my proposal.

  5. I am interested in what drug court participants think about drug court and how effective the program is. My research design is usuing an existing dataset. It was difficult finding an unrestricted dataset. I have to work on narrowing down my variables from the dataset I chose.

  6. My research is focusing on juvenile delinquency. I am particularly interested in the impact of non-resident fathers of African-American and white juveniles in relation to delinquency. I have started my purposal already and will finish up this weekend. I have chosen the content analysis research method. There is not alot of information on this topic so through researching newspaper articles I hope to gather enough information.

  7. After last week's class I've decided that a survey and focus group was not a decision well thought out for my research assignment. It appears as if using existing data will best help me in finding a link between registered sex offenders and recidivism. Despite the popularity of the subject the amount of information directly related to Megan's Law appears to be limited at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/NACJD/. I suppose more researching will help me find what I'm looking for!

My research proposal is on ex-offenders involved in rehabilitation programs and whether or not they are effective. My original research design was going to be a survey and focus group. However, I do not think I am going to get the results I am looking for by surveying Kean students. I am leaning more toward existing data now. I just hope I can find enough data on my topic. To be continued.

  9. My research proposal is on offenders who go to a halfway house or have some kind of supervised program post release are they less likely to recidivate. I think my Topic is great I have worked in the field a few years with comunity corrections/halfway houses..Not too much difficulty finding articles..I was originally going to do survey/focus groups..however I think content analysis would be a better approach? Im stuck right there..

  10. My research proposal focuses on the impact correctional officers have on the prison inmate population. I plan to use existing data. Im hoping this will not be a difficult task.

  11. I am researching whether or not there are a common set of traits or factors that lead youths into joining gangs. I have found the additional pieces of relevant literature to review and have decided to download an existing database as my research design mainly because I believe it would be quite difficult to obtain data directly from gang members or their associates. Now it is time to find a data set and pick variables and hope that I will eventually figure out how to operate SPSS.

My research proposal focuses on juvenile delinquency and the programs in which they are put into after a juvenile trial and sentencing. The main programs I look into are boot camps and juvenile correctional schools. I am also looking to find out if these programs work for the juveniles or causing recidivism as adults. I plan on using existing data for my research along with using the SPSS program.

My research is on the effectiveness of the scared straight program and what, if anything can be changed to improve the long term outcome of this program. I understand that I must shift my mind set slightly because professor McManimon has different ways of doing things. On Wednesday during our one on one time with Dr. Hassett-Walker I plan on discussing exactly what must be changed. I have studied the major researchers, ex. James Finckenauer. Now I submit that a simple random sample method will yield the best accuracy for my research.

  14. My research project is going to be on the correlation (if any) between domestic violence and police officers (being the abusers). At this point, I am torn between using content analysis and using an existing dataset. I was hoping to speak with Dr. Hassett-Walker about this and receive her input during one-on-one tonight; however, the school is closed.

My research project is going to be about recidivism among juveniles. I was going to use a survey approach but now I think I am going build a data base in SPSS and I am going to be using existing data sources. My proposal is turning out pretty well and im spending a lot of time on it

  17. My research question will be to see the correlation if any with juveniles coming from a divorced/single parent home or a married home. I will use existing data set numbers. I have another research question that i might choose over this one once i get to talk to Dr. Hassett-Walker i can decide.

My research is on juvenile sex offenders reoffending after reciving treatment or programs while in detention. i was going to use a survey and focus group for my data but have switched it over to using existing data. i am going to use spss for my data now insted of trying to build my own. it is working out much easier now then before.

My research proposal will examine the correlation between childhood bullying and whether or not it is a source for violent behavior in adolescence. I will use my proposal from Research Methods and make changes as noted from your final assessment. I will make a SPSS database formed from existing data.

  21. My research is going to be on whether educational and vocational programs in jail actually reduce recidivism. I am going to download existing data from ICPSR.org. I will also include anything else that may be relavent to my topic. I will use my research proposal from last semester and build off of that. I'm excited!

  23. This is Jason Selander posting to let you know I am alive and well. Beautiful weather we have outside. My proposal has to do with the wrongfully convicted. I will be E-mailing you soon to find out what we should do about the homework assignment you have extended and class was cancelled today.

My research is on sex offenders and if we can predict whether or not they will re-offend. I'm just going to fine tune my proposal from research methods. And I'm going to either be doing a content analysis or going to be using an existing dataset, I still have to decide.

  25. My research is on Online Gambling and whether or not making it legal can help our country financially. My proposal is almost finished and the method I will be using to perform my research will be a survey and focus group.

  26. My proposal deals with juvenile recidivism. What causes juvenile recidivism and why do offenders reoffend is a main part. I will be doing a survey and focus group for my proposal.

  27. I have chosen to do survey and focus groups. I ran into some problems getting the required amount of people due to it being mid-term week at the campus. I ended up surveying and recording the focus groups answers of 21 people, with a group of 4 people, a couple groups of 3 people, and the rest are groups of 2 people. I have typed up all my focus group responses into Word, which it is on two tapes as well. I will need some help setting up my skeleton for entering my survey data into SSPS. I also need further clarification for the rest of the process to make sure that I am doing it correctly.

  29. My name is Andre Rodriguez and SPSS is not as easy as i thought it would be using existing data. I have my variables that i want to use but putting them into spss is where everything just falls. i am hoping class time on 3/24 in the computer lab will open my understanding to it more. I'm almost done, if i can just get the spss down then i can sail right to finish. I hoping to re-try spss again with my data set on Weds.

  30. My topic is on Lation immigration and does it contribute to increased crime within the United States? As a Latino myself many sterotypes have been made regarding immiration and I think that before people can give bias opinions on such sensitive topics it is best to be educated with the right knowledge. Many years ago immigration was more welcoming than it is today, trying to anazlye certain aspects of todays immirgants coming into the U.S. will help to see why people have these percepections that they did not so many years ago.
